Tips and Documentation

Warning

E17 is Beta software, it's still in development, so it may segfault for no apparent reason at any time. This won't make your entire system freeze or shut down, after all. You'll almost always be able to recover E17 (it never happened to me not to be able to recover it), so you're work will be relatively secure and OK, but always rember that E17 is still a beta, so it's impossible for Geubuntu to provide a 100% stable version of this distro until a stable release of E17 happens.

Live CD Username and Pasword

Username and passwordto access the Live CD session are just geubuntu and geubuntu.

How to install Geubuntu

To install Geubuntu you'll just have to run "Install" from the System --> Administration menù in Gnome Panel. The usual and user-friendly Ubuntu automated installer will be launched (ubiquity).

Known E17 issues

Experimenting with the current beta release of E17 I've noticed that there are certain actions keen to make E17 segfault. As I said, this is not a big issue since your applications won't even notice this, you'll just have to recover E17 either pressing F1 or clicking on the recover button with your mouse.

- An issue I noticed for sure has something related with the module "Window selector". When you edit a Shelf where this module is loaded in, you have to click apply for the changes to take effect because if you press directly the "OK" button, E17 will segfault and the changes will not take effect. This is a minor issue of course and it's only due to the beta stage of Enlightenment 0.17, hopefully it will become far more stable with the next releases.

- It occasionally happens, at log-in, that a message appears warning the user that the Theme used for the splash screen has a bug. Don't care about this warning, it isn't true. You can continue using the Default Theme.

- Very often the logout takes some time to complete. After some seconds a warning will appear telling the user that the logout is taking too much time. At this warning, choose to "logout now" and everything will go OK.

Known Geubuntu Issues

There are some minor issues related to the poor integration between Gnome and E17 at the current stage. Remember that Geubuntu is newborn in the Linux world and it is a particular and peculiar experiment, so, with time we'll create a better integration between Gnome and E17. We just need some code.

- Shutdown from the Gnome Panel won't work, it will only close the Gnome Panel. If you do press the shutdown button from the System menù in the Gnome Panel, you will be able to relaunch gnome-panel easily, it is in listed in the applications menù under system tools. To shutdown Geubuntu you hve to use the E17 menù. This menù can be called by left-clicking on any free part of the desktop or by left-clicking on the big "E" animated icon the main shelf.

- Trash bin applet launches "nautilus", when clicked, instead of "nautilus --no-desktop". For that reason it is safer not to use the trash bin applet because the gnome desktop will be loaded too and to shut it down you'll have to "sudo killall nautilus". Hopefully someone will be able to hack the trash bin applet in the future so that it no more opens the desktop together with nautilus. Also, remember that when calling nautilus from any terminal or command line, you'll have to add a --no-desktop option or nautilus will open together with the gnome-desktop.

- If Entrance is used to log-in the system (And it is by default), Network Manager won’t work, we don’t know why but are working on this. If you have a solution you can consider helping us out.

Hints on E17

Enlightenment 0.17 is extremely customizable, you'll have to play a bit with it to discover its full potential, even if it is still very user friendly. From the main menù of E17 (Click on the big E icon on the main shelf or on an empty part of the screen) you'll find a configuration utility. There you'll be able to choose also which applications to launch when Geubuntu is started. Several applications are already setted there, including gnome-panel, gnome-settings-daemon and many more. You can add your own applications at startup if you wish. Just remember that changing the options in the standard Gnome-Session manager will not affect the Geubuntu System.

Another good think to know about E17 is that it uses shelves (Like the main bar you see on the button of the screen) and that you can customize them by right clicking on an empty space of a shelf. There are many things to can make a shelf do, the main purpose of a shelf to host a certain number of Modules, chosen by you. For example, the Ibar apps Launcher is a module just like the big "E" animated icon. From the advanced options ou can ask a shelf to autohide itself too.

For more informations about E17, we suggest you to read the Enlightenment Wiki. In the Home Page of Geubuntu you'll also find useful links to some E17 related sites, such as Get-E, a web page full of themes, wallpapers, applications and much more.
